This morning a local guide took us on a walking tour of Split.

With 300,000 inhabitants, Split is more than just a tourist destination; however, for us the newly upgraded promenade along the waterfront was very inviting.
This is part of the original Roman (200 AD) wall protecting the city.
Once you go through the wall you come to this wonderful pedestrian Main Street that leads to the harbor. This picture was taken on a Sunday morning. Last night it was packed with people.
Along the harbor is this wonderful promenade lined with cafés and gelato stands.
This is the ultimate people watching location.
The last 180 meters of the promenade is the back wall of Diocletian's Palace. We discovered they were filming the HBO show Game of Thrones. Saw lots of support trucks and scenery but no actors.
This Palace is huge and there was no way to get an overall photograph. The structure (1,800 years old) is in amazingly good condition. It is being actively excavated and repaired. Here's a picture in the cellar (i.e. foundation). The horizontal red brick is replacement brick which means all the other brick is original. Notice the original ceiling stones.
Today some 2,000 people live in the palace.
After the tour it was time to enjoy the promenade, have a beer (actually 2 beers) and pizza, and watch the people.
As we were walking along the promenade, I looked over the harbor wall and saw many dead rats floating in the water.

Don't think I'll go swimming in Split.
As the sun was setting we climbed the hill near town.
Nice ending to a fun day exploring Split.
