Today was a travel day. Remember that beautiful lake view from our veranda? Well, this morning it rained hard and the clouds were so low you could barely see the lake let alone the surrounding mountains.

Half way on the two hour drive to Te Anau the sun suddenly broke through the clouds. From then on it was a beautiful drive.

Early rise this morning to beat the crowds to Milford Sound. It's a 2.5 hour drive from Te Anau. Milford Sound is a must see in New Zealand and Te Anau is the most popular rally point. So the road to and from is packed with tour buses.
There are numerous ways to explore the sound. The weather was excellent so we signed up for a nature cruise. It rains 2 out of every 3 days here so we are lucky to catch a nice day.
These pictures don't capture the grandeur of the surrounding cliffs.
Some are over 1.5 miles high.
On the way to the dock, our excitement increases as we catch this view.
Time to board the ship.
Geology Lesson 1
A sound is created by river erosion.
A fjord is created by glacier movement.
Therefore, Milford Sound is not really a sound, it's a fjord.
Our guide is a Maori descendent. Notice the pony tail and green stone earrings. He's only missing the tattoos.
We finally reach the Tasman Sea (at least I think it's a sea).
Barbara spots some seals basking in the sun.
Steve is in his element. Maybe the captain could use some help.

It's a tradition for every boat to get close to the water falls and see how wet they can get their passengers.

When our turn comes, Barbara hides below deck.
Believe me, that water is mighty powerful.
The brochures (local) describe Milford Sound as the 8th Wonder of the World. I had to look that up. Turns out there are only 7 official wonders. So anybody can claim the 8th spot.
USA's New 7 Wonders lists The Internet as #5
