Road Trip August 2010
San Jose to Los Anegles

Any body home?

Apple Farm Inn,  San Luis Obispo

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

Every visit to Pismo Beach must include a stop for the award winning clam chowder at The Splash Cafe.

We got lucky because the line was very short.

Santa Maria, CA

1970  $21,500                                        My first house in Orcutt                                     2010

You can see more pictures here

The Hitching Post was very popular with locals and visiting contractors to Vandenberg AFB

And this is why it was/is popular.

A trip down memory lane for me.

Solvang

Replica of the Little Mermaid Statue

This is the picture I took in 2008 of the real Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.  Notice any thing differnt?

Santa Barbara

Brophy Bros. Restaurant

Ganna Walska Lotusland

An exact replica of the Reagan Oval Office

Probably as close as I'll ever get to the real thing.

I was invited aboard Air Force 1

A section of the Berlin Wall

An exhibition of vintage motorcycles was a surprise.  Apparantly, it was to honor Prsident Reagan's gutsy move to order a 45% tariff on the import of Japanese motorcycles to protect the poorly made US made Harley Davidson motocycles.
Notable was the motorcycle ridden by Steve McQueen in the movie "The Great Escape"

Watching the sun set at the end of Santa Monica Pier

We attended a live taping of the Jimmy Kimmel Show.  The celebrity that night was Juliette Lewis.  The studio is on Hollywood Blvd

Directly across the street is the Kodak Theatre (formerly the Grauman's Chinese Theatre).  Home of the Oscar Show.

This is Hollywood meca for tourist.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2,500 stars over 15 blocks.

I only counted 2,499.

Long Beach,  CA

Great tour of the Queen Mary

Then we caught the Catalina Express to Avalon.

Ariving in Avalon

We found a great hotel.

Hiked almost 2 miles out of town to experience the world famous Buffalo Nickel Restaurant.

The mudslide was excellent and so was the buffalo burger.

The library was rather sparse due to a disagreement between Tricia and Julie on how to manage the money (which has since been settled).  Also, the Government wouldn't release any papers or attifacts until the money matter was resolved.

So I had plenty of time for my meeting with Winston, Charles, and Konrad.

Getting to go inside the helio was a real treat.

The library was built next to Nixon's boyhood home in Yorba Linda.  The tree was planted by his father.  Pat and Richard are burried on the property.

Nixon learned to play on this piano.

Nixon was born in this bed.

Barbara's first teaching job in Bakersfield  1968

We had lunch at Barbara's favorite dive in Bakersfield

On the way home, it was a trip down memory lane for Barbara.  After graduating from St. Olaf College she accepted a teaching job in sunny Bakersfield California.

After evaluating her performace, they transferred her to a school that really needed help.  McFarland HS.

This school was made famous in the film "McFarland USA" which chronicaled the success of the coach who turned the cross country running team into champions.
