Day 3
(Afternoon)

Stovepipe Wells is a little way station in the middle of Death Valley.

Prospectors traveling across the valley dug for water near this spot. To mark the hole, someone stuck a length of stove pipe in the sand beside it. Thus was born STOVE PIPE WELLS.

There is a motel with swimming pool, a gas station/general store, a gift shop, a ranger station and a restaurant/bar. The food was pretty bad but I couldn't resist buying a T-shirt at the gift shop.

This is the entrance to Mosaic Canyon

This canyon features marble that has been polished smooth by rushing water.

The canyon is narrow in some spots and wide in others.

Extensive examples of ancient sediment layers are visible.

In several places the marble has been worn smooth by erosion along with the help of some visitors.

Our next stop was the Mesquite Flat Dunes. As you can see the wind was whipping up quite a storm. While walking on the dunes, sand got in my hair, eyes, ears, nose, pockets and stuck to my face (which was lathered with san tan lotion).

The blowing sand made it very unpleasant so we didn't stay very long.

While exploring the sand dunes we felt rain drops and decided it was time to end our day of adventure.
