Day 3
(Afternoon)
Stovepipe Wells is a little way station in the middle of Death Valley. Prospectors traveling across the valley dug for water near this spot. To mark the hole, someone stuck a length of stove pipe in the sand beside it. Thus was born STOVE PIPE WELLS. |
There is a motel with swimming pool, a gas station/general store, a gift shop, a ranger station and a restaurant/bar. The food was pretty bad but I couldn't resist buying a T-shirt at the gift shop. |

This is the entrance to Mosaic Canyon |
This canyon features marble that has been polished smooth by rushing water. |
The canyon is narrow in some spots and wide in others. |
Barbara scaling the marble wall. |
Extensive examples of ancient sediment layers are visible. |
|
|
|
In several places the marble has been worn smooth by erosion along with the help of some visitors. |
Our next stop was the Mesquite Flat Dunes. As you can see the wind was whipping up quite a storm. While walking on the dunes, sand got in my hair, eyes, ears, nose, pockets and stuck to my face (which was lathered with san tan lotion). |
|
|
The blowing sand made it very unpleasant so we didn't stay very long. |
While exploring the sand dunes we felt rain drops and decided it was time to end our day of adventure. |
