Vancouver Island

August 17th  2013

Checked out of Pacific Shores and drove to Victoria. On the way we stopped at Chemainus...a little town about half way to Victoria.

This town was fun to explore because there are some 48 murals painted on buildings around town. When the lumber business died, the town started to shrivel up.  One smart businessman got the idea of the murals to attract tourists. It worked. The place was crawling with people following the foot steps from one mural to another.

We stopped by the town park and noticed this guy with a parafoil out in the water. I'm still not sure if it was a kite or sail. He had it attached to a harness on his butt so I suspect he planned to fly over the water. Neat trick if you can pull it off. We watched him try for about 45 minutes. He never got it off the water.

We got a tip that there was a fun musical playing at the town theatre called "Singing in the Rain."   It turned out to be delightful. Your typically summer stock theatre with great music and enthusiastic theatre students. The theatre itself was the biggest surprise. It had stadium seating so every seat had a great view no matter how big the lady's hat was in front of you. And the place was nearly full which says something for a small town matinee.

Arrived in Victoria about 6 pm. Staying at the Best Western on the harbor because everything else is sold out. Turns out there is a big festival this weekend in addition to a gang of people in town for the canoe races. So our room does not have a harbor view.
