Drove to Whistler which is about 2 hours north of Vancouver. The drive is along the coast with fantastic views of the water and mountains. This is the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics. There are tons of luxury and basic lodging along with restaurants to match. The gondola ride to the top of the mountain is about a 2 hour excursion so we had to pass. We watched the ski runs being used for mountain bike slalom races, hang gliding and zip line running. This is a huge complex so we decided to take the guided tour. The architecture is designed all for vacationers. For instance, from any spot in the resort you have a view of mountains and trees. Whistler Mountain is not named after a person but named for a rodent that whistles when it gets anxious. |

After the tour we hiked to Lost Lake. |
We walked through the woods but when we got to the lake it was crowded with people enjoying the warm water and sun. I suspect the lake wasn't lost after all. |
The return path through the woods was very pleasant; however, we had to keep a sharp eye out for small toads. |
While the drive to Whistler was only two hours it took twice as long to get back to the hotel because of the traffic jam getting back into Vancouver. All the traffic has to squeeze down to a 3 lane bridge. In our direction only one lane was open. This is a terrible log jam but BC is reluctant to build any more bridges. While we think Vancouver is one of the best cities we have visited, the traffic getting in and out of town is a huge negative. Interestingly, the traffic in the downtown area is not bad…less than San Francisco.p.s. Barbara wants me to tell you how I really feel about the traffic...Here it is: *#%£/$&@(~>]<#*+¥_~. Got it? |
